Cable TV and video games weren't available during the years I grew up in Central Florida, so we kids were forced to use our imaginations to entertain ourselves. Growing up poor meant that if we wanted something we couldn't afford we had to do without it or learn to make it ourselves.
I was surrounded by the talented women of my family. I was awed by the beauty of their handicrafts and art. I never believed I would ever have half as much talent, even though I spent hours sitting at the knees of my mother, my grandmother, my aunts, wondrously trying to learn their craft. When it came time for me to select a craft of my own, I chose one that no one else in my family did: knitting.
My mother is a master crocheter. She can crochet intricate circular doily patterns on the smallest of crochet hooks. It has always baffled me how she can read and keep track of all those complicated details at the same time. Mom actually had very little knitting knowledge when I approached her as a teen, book at the ready and sticks in hand ready to learn. Fifteen minutes after I first asked for her guidance, I tugged the book from her hands and decided I’d teach myself. Trial and error was a long path to take, but I loved the act of creating crafts from my imagination and never gave up my creative visions. I have dabbled in all manner of crafts over the years, and only recently did I discover the joy of creature making - almost by accident!
I’ve always been an avid recycler, and frugality is an integral part of my nature. These two elements combined to have me looking around at the materials I had on hand to see what could be made from them. Socks were there. So were gloves. A bit of stuffing, a couple of button eyes and away I went. Many of my creatures are still made from recycled materials. All of my creatures are made because they make me happy. I usually catch myself smiling at some point during the making of each and every one of my creatures, and I love creating life stories to go with each.
My household is never dull - my wonderful mapmaker and boat builder husband, two cats and two dogs keep me entertained and inspired. Here in beautiful, historic Macon, Georgia, our imaginations are still alive. And it sure is nice to have cable TV on while I create!
