I was still thinking about Madison on my way back home to Macon after my meeting the other day. I wanted to see if I could squeeze in just one more stop before heading south. I made the turns again around the town square and found myself in front of what should have been the Tumblebug store. But it wasn't there. It was now a private office. I always get bummed out when some of my favorite shops close up.
So I took a drive just a bit down the road and ended up at the Dog Ear bookstore. I heard they shifted owners and I was hoping that things wouldn't change drastically. They hadn't! It was still there all homey and lovely as ever. A friendly little black and white cat was chasing the jiggling string held by a giggling child. Gosh I love that place. Talk about your independent booksellers, now this is it. You can even have a seat in the comfy sofa and test out the books before you buy.
Upstairs in the mezzanine I ran across a set of Happy Hollister books. Laura mentioned these books the other day on her blog and I figured it was serendipity so I snatched them up. I also came home with the most delightful little handy man book. How bout that cover, eh?
Oh hey, and one of the proprietors is in a groovy band called the Bearfoot Hookers. They've got a fun little album available there with a lot of drinkin' songs called Greetings from Athens: a drinkin' town with a music problem. They do play around Georgia so be on the lookout for them if you live around here.
what a beautiful looking shop! i love the little glimpses into your part of the world- thank you. :)

Every time I drive by Madison I want to stop and look around, but I'm always too tired or in too much of a hurry. Maybe I just need to make a special trip there one day.

I love bookstores like that, where you feel as if you're in someone's home library. There's a store here like that. Alas, there aren't too many of that kind nowadays, are there? I miss the old "Mom and Pop" bookstores!
Thanks for the nice comment over at my blog, BTW!

Thank you for your comment on my blog the other day.
It was so funny for me to visit your blog this AM as my aunt and uncle were just here this past weekend and they live in Madison, GA. Small world!
I have never been as they have only lived there for the past year, but we are going to visit in mid October.
I love antiques and I am told there are some wonderful shops. I will try to get to AThens as well...
Thanks for sharing the lovely photos.

My idea of heaven is a bookstore, especially with used books (I like used things...hence my line of work..tee-hee) It looks so wonderful there! I bet it smells good too...they usually do...inhale...

That looks like my kind of bookstore!
I love the glimpse into this town you've given us... I don't have any plans to head south, but if I do get to the Peach State, I might have to make a little detour.
