When I moved to central Georgia from Florida a few years ago the one thing that was impossible to replace was the abundance of water. Growing up on the Gulf of Mexico meant that water was never far away. It was a feature always there whether going out of your way to enjoy it or just daily driving to and from places.
This is now the farthest inland I've ever lived and water is not so
easy to come by. There are a few lakes here and there and I've grown to
rely on these for my water fix. They've even trucked in boatloads of
sand to create a beach. Sometimes I go there and just stand
with my eyes shut and listen to the lapping waves. It reminds me of
home so much and for a moment I feel transported. And sometimes there
is even the breeze coming off the water that electrifies my skin and
brings me alive, just like back home.
But there is one thing that they weren't able to replicate. The smell. Living on the Gulf there is a certain indescribable smell that I expect to enjoy near any body of water. But this far inland there is no smell. You can only get that by being there, in Florida, near the water. There is no TV show, webpage, or video game that can give you the experience. You just have to be there.
And is Lucky the Cowdog leaving those hoof prints? Nah, those are actually deer tracks from a fellow who must have needed a drink in the night before all the humans showed up to enjoy the park.

I live on the Gulf, where did you live? I love to look at blogs with pictures of green, rolling hills but there is nothing like white sand between your toes :)

Ah yes, the florida smell. Although, I actually think it is kinda stinky. But whenever I need to escape for a minute, I remember the orange blossoms and the salt.

Ugh. I feel your pain. (minnesota, ya know - land of 10,000 lakes) ANd you're right - it doesn't smell like the briny sea, here, but there is are distinct smells associated with the lakes and the seasons.
Love to cowdog!

Hey, you should try being in Kansas!! Even worse!! But I do love to spend as much time as possible on our Army Corp of Engineers made lake, it is a little splash of heaven in the middle of a prairie land!

I know the exact smell you mean. I love the smell of the ocean. Glad to see you have some water, however small, near you.

My dad lived in Siesta Key for about 10 years, and i do know what you mean about that gulf coast, florida smell and feel....

Isn't it interesting how smells become so intwined in our memories of home? And the Gulf is such a distinctive place. I'm sure you miss it much.
Love your little creature creations. And thanks for visiting my blog. I'm glad to know I'm not just talking to myself. Although that has its merits as well. Ha.

Lovely post! There really is nothing like the gulf coast...it's one of the most enjoyably beautiful places I've ever seen. Love the photo of your pup in the lake- looks like fun!

I understand how you feel... though not quite the same, growing up along the Ohio river and by a lake, at least there was always water around. Now I am so landlocked, it seems I never see water at all! Your dog looks like it's having a ball out there!!

I know the feeling. Having been born and raised just one mile from the sea, I miss it soooooooo much. We now live miles and miles from the sea.

I miss the water so much where we live... Although where we live they don't even bother with fake lakes or anything... just flat prairie land.
