There are very few garden books I will ever recommend you buy. Mostly, I suggest you check them out of your library! But The Southern Living Garden Book edited by Steve Bender is one that should be in every southern gardener’s library. This is a reference book, pure and simple. It’s my go to book when I need information about some random plant that’s crossed my path. All the basic facts are there: annual or perennial, etc., sun or shade, how much water, what zone, plus recommended varieties and their characteristics. The index has both common names and Latin names. So no need for you to have to know that Mother-in-law’s tongue is also Sansevieria trifasciata. This is a fantastic book.
I still recommend that you try before you buy so hot foot it on down to your local public library to check out a copy. If you’re in Georgia you can click here to find out which libraries have it. Those outside of Georgia can click here to see which libraries near you have it. (hint: type in your zip code so you can find the closest library that has it). Enjoy!
I love books made specifically for the Southern garden. This book looks extremely useful! The fact that they have the common name as well as the latin is a great bonus, too!
